Three School Board Seats up for Grabs this Year
Three Seattle school board members' terms are up this November, but only one of them, board President Michael DeBell, has been public about his intentions to seek re-election before candidate filing begins next week.
DeBell, who represents District 4, has already opened a campaign account with the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission. Thus far, he has raised $946 and spent $500 in the non-partisan race. Neither he, nor any of his colleagues who could seek re-election, have knowledge of any opponents or potential opponents.

Cheryl Chow, who represents District 7, and Mary Bass, of District 5, have terms expiring this year. Chow has said she will not seek re-election, and Bass would not confirm her political intentions at a recent school board meeting.
Candidate filing begins June 1 through June 5, according to the King County Elections Web site.
A number of hot-button education issues have recently played out or are outstanding, such as the student assignment plan, which will determine a new system for how students are placed into various schools. A vote on student assignment is expected next month, with many parents pushing for proximity to home being a top priority in the decision-making.
Already, a staff recommendation to switch to a new high school math textbook series proved highly controversial. Many students and parents and parent groups spoke against the staffs recommendation for a Discovery Series text, an inquiry-based model that emphasizes concepts. A close runner-up, and a preferred option to some was Prentice Hall, a series based on mastery through problem-solving and computational fluency.
DeBell, Chow and Bass have had personal ties to the school system, whether it is graduating from Seattle Public Schools or participating in various school organizations.
